Stumbling Blocks – Overcoming Your Own And Avoiding Being A Stumbling Block For Others

In the Christian faith, the Bible is considered to be the foundational guide for understanding God’s will and the principles that should govern our lives. Throughout its pages, the Bible addresses various aspects of human nature and behavior, including the concept of stumbling blocks. A stumbling block, in the biblical context, refers to something or someone that hinders or obstructs an individual’s journey towards worship and getting closer to God. Furthermore, the Bible highlights the responsibility of believers in ensuring they do not become stumbling blocks to others on their spiritual path.
The notion of stumbling blocks can be found in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. In the Old Testament book of Leviticus, God instructs His people not to place obstacles in front of those who have physical impairments. This command is not merely about avoiding physical stumbling blocks but rather extends to a metaphorical level, emphasizing the importance of not hindering others in their pursuit of righteousness and relationship with God. Leviticus 19:14 states, “Do not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but fear your God. I am the Lord.”
The New Testament further expands on the concept of stumbling blocks. In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus warned his disciples about causing others to stumble or fall away. He states in Matthew 18:6, “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.” This passage showcases the severity of being a stumbling block and the responsibility believers have to protect the faith of others, particularly the vulnerable.
The Apostle Paul also addresses the issue of stumbling blocks in his letters. In Romans 14, Paul discusses disputes among believers regarding food and observance of certain days. He emphasizes that believers should not let these matters become stumbling blocks for others, but rather should prioritize love, unity, and building up the faith of fellow believers. In Romans 14:13, Paul says, “Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother.”
Throughout the Bible, it becomes evident that believers have a responsibility to be mindful of their actions and attitudes, ensuring they do not become stumbling blocks to others. This encompasses not only refraining from actions that could lead others astray but also actively seeking to edify and encourage fellow believers. Christians are called to promote unity, love, and spiritual growth within the community of faith.
In practical terms, individuals can strive to avoid becoming stumbling blocks by demonstrating humility, compassion, and respect for others. This includes refraining from engaging in behavior that may cause others to doubt their faith or cause emotional distress. It also involves considering the impact of our actions, words, and choices on those around us, seeking to build up rather than tear down. By fostering an environment of support and encouragement, believers can contribute positively towards the spiritual journey of others.
Ultimately, the Bible offers guidance on how to navigate the potential stumbling blocks in our lives and how to avoid becoming stumbling blocks to others. Through love, understanding, and a commitment to unity, believers can create an atmosphere that promotes worship, growth, and a deeper relationship with God. As followers of Christ, we are called to honor and respect one another, recognizing the significance of our role in helping others stay on their path toward God.
