Faith That Holds Even When Shaken
Mark 9:24 — “Immediately the boy’s father exclaimed, ‘I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!’”
Exodus 17:12 — “When Moses’ hands grew tired… Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset.” This is the essence of faith.
Hebrews 11:1 — “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”
James 1:6 — “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt…”
Matthew 14:31 — “Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. ‘You of little faith,’ he said, ‘why did you doubt?’”
Psalm 56:3 — “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”
Doubt is not the opposite of faith; it is the place where faith learns to breathe. The father who cried out to Jesus believed and doubted at the same time—and Jesus received him. Moses’ arms grew weak, and others held them up so Israel could stand strong. That moment in Exodus is the first time Scripture uses the word that points to faithfulness and steadiness. Faith is not flawless certainty; it is trust that keeps reaching for God even when we feel unsure. Real faith includes trembling, questions, and moments when we need others to hold us up. Jesus meets us there, not with shame, but with strength.
lyrics from Zeb of Virginia Beach and theholygospel.net
from his song “Lord Help Me Live This Righteous Life”
i stumble i tumble i rise again
this road is rocky but i’ll reach the end
a mustard seed of faith can move the mountain
but the dead seeds pile up near the fountain
narrow door it beckons but its out of reach
every step i take feels like a breech
Lord help me live this righteous life
pierce through my darkness with your Holy light
I’m slippin and slidin but I’m holding tight
Lord help me live this righteous life
“Lord, take my belief and my unbelief. Hold me steady when I am weak, and teach me that doubt is a doorway where Your faithfulness carries me.”
Painterly graphic: warm desert light over a rocky hillside, Moses on a rise with arms supported on each side, soft golden tones, gentle sky, atmosphere hopeful and steady with no darkness.

NOAH, early 50s, stands in a hospital hallway—hands trembling.
His daughter’s in surgery. Again.
He’s prayed for months. Fasted. Trusted.
And yet… fear coils in his chest like a rope.
Voice, shaky:
“I believe You can heal her, God. But… what if You don’t? Do I still trust You then?”
He slumps into a chair. Head in hands.
Not angry. Just… tired. Like Moses on the hill, arms too heavy to hold up.
Then his phone buzzes. A text from his small group:
“We’re praying. Right now.”
Minutes later, his friend Marcus walks in—no words, just sits beside him.
Another friend, Lena, brings coffee. Stands behind him, hand on his shoulder.
Like Aaron and Hur, they hold what he cannot hold alone.
Voice, softer:
“I didn’t feel strong. But I felt held.”
He whispers the father’s cry from Mark 9:
“I do believe… help my unbelief.”
And in that honesty—no shame, just surrender—peace doesn’t roar.
It settles. Like dawn over desert hills.
Weeks later, his daughter walks with a cane—but she walks.
Noah doesn’t say, “My faith healed her.”
He says, “God held us—even when I couldn’t hold on.”
Now, when he prays, he doesn’t hide his doubts.
He brings them—like Zeb sings:
“I stumble, I tumble, I rise again… I’m slippin’ and slidin’, but I’m holding tight.”
Final shot: Noah stands on a sunlit hill, arms open—not in victory pose, but in trust.
Not because fear is gone.
But because Someone greater is near.
