How to Discern Truth in a World Full of Deceivers

Matthew 24:4–5 — “Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name…”

1 John 4:1 — “Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God…”

Matthew 7:15–16 — “Watch out for false prophets… by their fruit you will recognize them.”

2 Timothy 3:16–17 — “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting…”

Galatians 1:8 — “Even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!”

Acts 17:11 — “They examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.”

Jesus warned that deception would surge in the last days—not just lies, but plausible distortions wrapped in spiritual language. But He didn’t leave us defenseless. Discernment isn’t about suspicion—it’s about anchoring in Scripture, observing fruit, and testing everything against Christ. Truth doesn’t flatter the ego; it conforms us to Jesus. It doesn’t shift with culture; it stands firm in grace and holiness. When voices multiply, return to the Word. When emotions run high, seek humility. The Spirit of truth leads us not to confusion, but to clarity, conviction, and Christ.

lyrics by Zeb of Virginia Beach Church
from his song “Hypocrisy”

Hypocrisy Don’t sit well with me
Hypocrisy Dont give it to me
Hypocrisy Lord help me be free
from Hypocrisy

if you want me to be your friend
know this first, we’re getting close to the end
And there just ain’t time
for all this thievin and lyin
and hypocrisy

My friend he came a callin’
He said we are all fallen
We got to accept Jesus
We gotta open the door
we gotta have love in our hearts
and help the poor
Then he was seen dancin with a spoon
on the Disco dance floor
Hypocrisy

He carried 350 lbs on his back
Battered he walked without pause
a righteous man on a holy mission
and an eternal Holy cause
He brought back the dead
He healed the blind and the lame
and so we pray
to his Holy name
He died for you and He died for me
and unlike anyone you will ever see
He lived and died without
an ounce or a moment of hypocrisy

Well the banker lives in privilege
with the politician behind their veil
of lies jumping off the ledge
into the fires of hell
to smile and steal from you and me
so deeply they drink from the well (of)….

Lord, guard my heart from smooth lies. Give me courage to test every message by Your Word. Let me love truth more than comfort. Amen.
