When They Want a Puppet, Not a Person
Welcome to The Daily Redemption for Thursday, March 12, 2026 — where we name the quiet violence of being loved not for who you are, but for who someone needs you to be—and how to respond with grace without surrendering your soul.
Galatians 2:4–5 This matter arose because some false believers had infiltrated our ranks to spy on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might be preserved for you.
Galatians 1:10 “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
Matthew 11:19 “The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”
Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Matthew 10:16 I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.
Proverbs 22:3 The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the penalty.
2 Thessalonians 3:14–15 If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take note of that person and have nothing to do with them, so that they will be ashamed. Yet do not regard them as an enemy, but warn them as a brother or sister.
1 Corinthians 5:11 But now I am writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.
Some people don’t want you—they want a version of you they can control. They craft a role for you: the always-available helper, the quiet yes-man, the emotional sponge, the compliant volunteer. And when you gently say “no,” set a limit, or show up as your actual self—they call you rude, cold, or unloving. That’s not your failure. It’s their exposure. Jesus didn’t accommodate Herod’s curiosity. Paul didn’t yield to false brothers demanding circumcision. They withdrew—not in hatred, but in holy preservation. You can love someone without becoming their puppet. You can honor Christ while refusing to perform for approval. And if they reject the real you? That grief is real—but their rejection doesn’t define your worth. The One who knows you fully still calls you “beloved.”
Lord, give me courage to be who You made me—not who others demand me to be. When I’m called “rude” for having boundaries, remind me: Jesus was called a glutton, a drunkard, and a demon for telling truth. Help me respond with grace without surrendering my soul. And when I must step back from toxic demands, let it be an act of obedience—not bitterness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
