Is It Possible To Pray Always – In the Spirit, On All Occasions, For All God’s People? DRBBB 4 April 26

Welcome to today’s Daily Redemption — where we discover that prayer isn’t just an activity we schedule, but a posture we inhabit — praying in the Spirit, on all occasions, for all God’s people.

What does it mean to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions”? In this Daily Redemption reflection, discover that prayer isn’t just an activity you schedule — it’s the posture that activates the armor of God. Rooted in Ephesians 6:18 and Romans 8:26, this piece reframes prayer as spiritual warfare that keeps you alert and interceding for all God’s people.

Featured Scripture and Commentary
“Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” — Ephesians 6:18

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a big fan of Ephesians 6:10-14. Paul says to “stand” against the ways of the dark spirits with which we wrestle using the word 4 times and to use the armor of God as defense (although the sword of the gospel is the one weapon which is when our offensive moves enters the ring). But at the end of this epic New Testament invocation is something that the faithful need to have forefront in their minds, hearts and souls at all times. It is truncated to simply 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.
For me this space is turning into true confessions. Let it be so. It is a safeguard of my humility lest I seem to be seeking to take center stage and stand in front of the representations of the Cross. With this I will say that I almost never remember to put on the full armor of God. I almost never say “grace”. When something unsettling happens – be it an argument with my landlord or other or I don’t hear the cat who is very vocal when I wake up in the morning or someone for whom I might be inclined to pray because they clearly don’t know what they are doing as they tailgate me (or do they?) turning to God is an after thought. I have only this to say in my defense. The number of times per day that my mind turns to God is a large number. Especially right now as yesterday was Good Friday and I am going to be misty-eyed and moody right through until Sunday morning when we may once again, as a spirit in the body of Christ in the house of God, will be able to say once again, “Hallelujah”.
USING THE ARMOR TO PRAY ALWAYS
Yesterday I wanted my car (as ostentatious as it is with Jesus and reflective stickers) to be otherwise clean as a whistle when I pulled into the church parking lot. The last thing that happened as I made it through the mechanical car wash was that my “full armor of God” magnetic image got ripped off and cast aside by the last swipe of the giant belts that whip your car into cleanness. The symbology of the attack was not lost on me but in a few short moments I was amongst the brethren at church to be in full remembrance of Jesus and the greatest act of love in the history of the world. Once again, saved. Immediately I made plans to replace the image lest there be any of the car’s silver color that be allowed to see the light of day and that the front of my car not be protected by the armor. Is it not a metaphor for our daily attempts to “pray always”? We fail at this every single day. The armor gets stripped away by an attack or distraction and then we forget to put it back on. We are exposed and defenseless even while Jesus still has his hand on our souls but we have pulled away and have to come meekly and humbly back. So keep the armor ready. Seek to remember to put it on in the morning. I may get an actual suit of armor and hang it in the doorway of my bedroom if that is what it takes for me to remember with my 62 yr old brain. And maybe set an alarm throughout the day to perform the ritual every time we need a “reset”. Sorry folks, praying always is impossible and requires we set something up like a biometric system that reminds us every time we start to doze off from our vigilance. It is a small price to pay for the presence of God and our awareness of it and His peace, love, joy, wisdom and other attributes which can be ours if we remember at each revolution of the merry go round to reach out for the ring. And when you get off the ride rememeber to STAND centered in the full armor of God which is Jesus.

Homily:

“Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” — Ephesians 6:18

Ephesians 6:18 isn’t the end of Paul’s letter. It’s the capstone of the armor of God.
We treat the armor as a checklist, but Paul’s final instruction is most vital: “And now… pray.”
Armor without prayer is just costume. You can strap on truth, righteousness, and peace — but if you’re not praying in the Spirit, you’re playing dress-up. Prayer activates the armor.
But we all drift. By mid-morning, the world’s noise drowns the Spirit. We stop praying and start relying on ourselves.
That’s when the armor becomes a spiritual reset.
When you realize you’ve ceased to pray, the armor is your path back. Anxious? Put back on the shoes of peace. Accused? Take up the shield of faith. These aren’t artifacts — they’re the way home to a centered heart.
“Pray in the Spirit on all occasions” — Not just crisis moments. All occasions: traffic jams, board meetings, midnight worries. Prayer isn’t a room you enter — it’s an atmosphere you breathe.
“Be alert” — Prayer keeps you awake. The enemy wants you drowsy, distracted, numb.
“Always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people” — Your prayer life isn’t just about you. It’s warfare on behalf of others. When you’re too weak to fight, someone else’s prayers hold you up.
God doesn’t need perfect preparations.
He wants your presence.
Armor up to start your day — but pray through to stay in His heart.—

Scripture:

Ephesians 6:18 Pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.

Ephesians 6:10–11 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

Romans 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.

Colossians 4:2 Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.

Luke 18:1 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.

James 5:16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Phillipians 4:6 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Prayer:

Lord, I’ve treated prayer like a scheduled appointment instead of a constant posture. Forgive me. Teach me to pray in the Spirit — not just with my words, but with Your leading. Make me alert to the spiritual battles around me — not distracted by the noise of this world. And stir my heart to pray for all Your people — not just my own needs, but the needs of Your whole body. I put on Your armor today — and I activate it with prayer. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
