…more satisfying than the solutions of man” – GK Chesterton -AMOS 1-3
We don’t have to fully explain away or minimize God’s intense wrath in Amos. We can let it be a heavy, awesome riddle, knowing that the ultimate answer to the riddle is found in the suffering and resurrection of Jesus
The tone is severe emphasizing here God’s justice and the consequences of covenant unfaithfulness particularly for Israel which is held to a higher standard because they are God’s people Where’s the daylight where’s the sunshine in all of this wrath and judgment? Well, you know, I think somebody that has maybe a better longer deeper understanding of God than I do and there are people out there might know where to look but it took me a little bit of digging So, where are that side of God in all this? It’s not in hope of restoration. There is no talk about that here. However later on in Amos 9 specifically 11 through 15 there’s some talk of hope in restoration. Lets dive deeper.
The Meaning For Our Lives: Amos 1–3
Take It to the Bank: Do you know that when Isaiah was out there prophesying the Israelis were like “we’re tired of all of your gloom and doom Give us some good news!” and actually the next thing that came from God through Isaish was the suffering man (before and after 53:5) And then the next thing was the resurrection and he was able to give them some good news – the best news ever if they could only embrace and understand it. So there’s always some good news coming for the righteous. God has promised that over and over. Know that. Take that to the bank.
The Blueprint for Repentance: This call to accountability implies God’s desire for his people to repent. Repentance is not what folks think it is. It is simply a paradigm shift, a viewpoint and perspective alteration which reaches out to God and specifically Jesus. He would not have gone into such great detail naming all of the sins or you know categories of sins rxcept to give an opportunity to repent or change their minds away from those sins. If the people turn back to God, there’s an implicit possibility of mercy. God understood that if he wants his people to repent or if he wants people around his people to repent He needed to advise them exactly what their crimes are.
Accountability for All Nations: God is not just pointing out the problems That he’s having with his people. He’s pointing out the problems that he’s having with all the pagan nations indicating that moral accountability applies to all and includes ethical living, treating others justly, avoiding exploitation and rejecting idolatry—of course, we don’t have any of that going here in the United States right now. No, not much but idolatry in terms of love of material things, celebrity, power even reliance on self all of these things is a universal expectation of all people by God that they will steer clear of them regardless of their faith or culture.
Privilege Brings Responsibility: With great power comes great responsibility we heard that somewhere by now but this is privilege brings responsibility. Amos underscores specifically chapter 3 verse 2 that the special covenant between Israel and God made their accountability stricter. You hear that Elon? And, no, transhumanism is not going to make a happy God. Do you hear that other High-profile people that have a lot of money and a lot of influence? God has higher expectations for them to live justly and faithfully and the fact that they very often don’t is not very good for their future lives in God. That they tinker with God’s creations especially that which was made in God’s image bodes a tragic future for them.
Listen to Warnings: God sent prophets like Amos to warn before judging. There are a lot of people right now that are warning us about the end times and A lot of that is very well founded. So right now we’re in the warning stage before the full judgment comes. This encourages attentiveness to prophetic voices, but not false prophets.
The Concrete Gargoyle Story:You know, there’s not a lot of people out there that are actually worshiping a golden calf I used to have an actual concrete gargoyle in my house, but I wasn’t worshipping it. So never mind that but Before I was saved I had that to ward off evil spirits of Scientology and Unity church new age wooo wooo. I suppose I didn’t know any better so I can be forgiven for not knowing much but not today. I need to and should know more and better
Empathy and the Moral Compass: There is a pretty sound and pretty corny saying that’s been kicking around for decades and it goes: Nobody cares How much you know until they know how much you care. It’s true. It’s all about caring, compassion – it’s all about empathy. It’s all about all those things. Because of that factor of God being within us and us seeing things that are right and that ain’t There’s this innate ability to see but first we have to care.
Messianic Significance: Something About Jesus
The Higher Standard: Israel was held to a higher standard because they are God’s people. Jesus comes as the true Israel, perfectly fulfilling the covenant relationship and bearing the full weight of responsibility for our moral and spiritual failures on the cross.
The Ultimate Good News: When people were tired of gloom and doom, the next thing from God was the suffering man and the resurrection. This points directly to Jesus Christ, who took on the severe consequences of covenant unfaithfulness so we could receive mercy.
The Hope and Restoration: The underlying call is to self-examination and alignment with justice and righteousness of God. If you need a replenishing of Hope and restoration, we should already have that because we are in Christ Jesus. Turn to the man on the cross who we died with and rose with at our baptism.
Classic Commentaries Corner
* “The severe naming of each transgression is not God’s desire to destroy, but His urgent call to reform. He lists our crimes precisely so that we may repent thoroughly, for a vague confession never brought a true turning to God.” — John Wesley
* “Every privilege we enjoy is a weight of accountability added to our souls. God will not wink at the sins of His own household; rather, those who sit closest to His light will face the swifter judgment if they choose the darkness.” — A.W. Tozer
* “When God speaks of judgment against the pagan nations, He proves that a universal moral compass is written on every human heart. No man can plead ignorance before the bar of the Ultimate Judge.” — Adam Clarke
* “The prophet’s voice sounds like gloom and doom only to those who love their sins. To the soul that desires righteousness, the severe warning is the highest proof of divine mercy, pointing us to the suffering man who bears our stripes.” — Matthew Henry

Prayer for Whomsoevers
Lord it has been said that there is more satisfaction in the riddles you provide for us to contemplate than in the answers that we come up with. Long before I was saved by your Son and our Lord and Saviour it was beginning to dawn on me that solutions in this world always become problems. Let us be mindful that any answers of any value come from one endeavor alone – to know you better and braver and clearer and with more love today than yesterday. As in the case of Job, the best had the worst outcome in this world – and so Job was a type of Christ. Let us all pray to be forever in your favor to understand that the real mission is not to understand but to realize that understanding is not the objective as much as simply being centered in you and your endless Grace. We can never fully understand you but by focusing on shortening the breach we can avail ourselves of the victory you offer. And so I pray in the name of your holy Son and all the people say “Amen!”
