Welcome to today’s Daily Redemption — where we discover that God’s presence in our darkest valleys isn’t passive — it’s armed with a rod to defend us and extended with a staff to rescue us.
Opening Worshipful Lyrics by Zeb of Virginia Beach Church
from his song “He Restoreth My Soul”
He restoreth my soul by the still waters
He restoreth my soul in the green pastures
He restoreth my soul I shall fear no evil
He restoreth my soul I shall not want
When the darkness has fallen
When Through the valley I roam
Still My cup runneth over
Still I am home
I shall fear no evil For He is with me
I shall fear no evil He comforts me
I shall fear no evil Nor enemies
He prepares a table He annointed me

Featured Scripture and Brief Commentary:
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” — Psalm 23:4
True confessions time, folks. I have read that many times over. Even wrote a song about Psalm 23 and always felt like “that’s perfect. Maybe even better that I have no idea what David is saying. It sounds scary but it feels sooooo soothing.” In fact, the rod sounded like something somebody’s dad used to whoop them with and the staff sounded like the non-clergy clerical who were always so mean. Better to just thing of happy sheep under a competent, caring shepherd and leave it at that. Well growing into the Lord’s Word means digging a little deeper than that which we maybe settled with for years. So today is when we get a graduation certificate as Psalm 23 Understanders who now feel they can lie down beside still waters, sit up and eat at the table prepared by the Lord in front of our enemies and feast while knowing we are safe and protected and embrace the rod and the staff which now don’t make us uneasy but give us comfort.
Oh and, by the way, the “darkest valley”? That is DARK. Viscerally DARK.
This scripture comes to mind… “Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Stretch out your hand toward heaven, that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, darkness which may be felt.’ So Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. They did not see one another; nor did anyone rise from his place for three days. But all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.”
— Exodus 10:21–23 (NKJV)
“But God” shines His light and comforts us even in darkness in this land in these days which can be…FELT.

Scripture:
John 10:11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
Hebrews 13:5 Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.
Isaiah 40:11 He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.
Ezekiel 34:16 I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak.
Matthew 28:20 And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

Homily:
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” — Psalm 23:4
We often read this and think: “God is with me — that’s nice.” But David wasn’t saying “nice.” He was saying specific.
A shepherd carried two tools:

The rod — a short, heavy club for defending against predators and correcting wandering sheep
The staff — a long crook for guiding, pulling back from edges, and rescuing when stuck

This isn’t generic presence. This is active shepherding.
When you’re in the valley:

The rod is God shutting down the predator voice whispering “You’re alone. You’re finished.”
The staff is God’s gentle pull when you’re trapped in grief, addiction, or regret — not yanking you out violently, but patiently working you loose

His presence isn’t just nearby.
It’s armed (rod) and reaching (staff).
That’s why it comforts — not because the valley disappears, but because you’re not navigating it defenseless or alone.
Prayer:
Lord, I’ve reduced Your presence to a vague comfort — “You’re with me, that’s nice.” Forgive me. You are not a passive observer in my valley. You are my Shepherd — armed with a rod to defend me from what would destroy me, and reaching with a staff to rescue me when I’m stuck. Today, wield Your rod against every predator voice attacking my mind. Extend Your staff to pull me from the brambles I cannot escape alone. I am not defenseless. I am not abandoned. I am shepherded. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
