Psalm 23: Fed In Front Of Your Enemies, Mercy That Hunts You Down

Psalm 23: Fed In Front Of Your Enemies, Mercy That Hunts You Down

He does not remove the enemies. He sets the table in front of them and pours a cup that runs over. The goodness and mercy do not trail you at a polite distance either, because the Hebrew word means to hunt, to chase down, to pursue like a predator with better intentions. Isaiah ends at the same table from the other side of it, the Servant seeing the light of life and being satisfied, dividing the spoils with the strong. Psalm 22:26 is the third chair, where the poor eat and are satisfied, Psalm 16 holds the cup and the portion, Isaiah 25 swallows death on the mountain, and Revelation 19:9 names the whole thing the marriage supper of the Lamb.

Contextual Grounding

David reflects on his life while walking through dangerous terrain, drawing on his personal background as a shepherd.

Emotional & Theological Depth

The threat of dark valleys and nearby enemies cannot destroy his peace because the Shepherd’s presence, rod, and staff offer constant comfort.

Application

It serves as the ultimate anthem of comfort, proving that God does not just watch from afar, but walks directly beside us in hard times.

Classic Commentaries Corner

Spurgeon on the table: “When a soldier is in the presence of his enemies, if he eats at all he snatches a hasty meal, and away he hastens to the fight. But observe: ‘Thou preparest a table,’ just as a servant does when she unfolds the damask cloth and displays the ornaments of the feast.” Not a ration in the trench. A table with a cloth on it.

John Trapp on the overflowing cup: those who have this happiness “must carry their cup upright, and see that it overflows into their poor brethren’s emptier vessels.” The cup runs over on purpose, and the purpose is somebody else’s thirst.

Alexander Maclaren, 1863, on where the following ends: nothing less than that he “enters his palace home, where the travel stained robe is laid aside, and he sits down with his father at his table.” Mercy does not follow you to the edge of the property. It follows you all the way inside.

Corroborating Scripture & Christological Connections

Psalm 23:5 — “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.” The enemies stay in the frame. The feast happens anyway.

Psalm 23:6 — “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” The Hebrew for follow is radaph, to pursue, which is what an enemy does. Here it is mercy doing the chasing.

Psalm 22:26 — “The poor will eat and be satisfied.” The lament psalm arrives at the same table from the other direction.

Isaiah 53:11–12 — “After he has suffered, he will see the light of life and be satisfied… he will divide the spoils with the strong.” The Servant’s satisfaction is a seat at this table.

Psalm 16:5 — “Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure.” The cup is not what he gives you. It is him.

Revelation 19:9 — “Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!” The table in front of enemies turns out to be a wedding.

Essential Takeaways

He feeds you in front of them. The enemies are not removed first, and the meal is not delayed until they leave.

Mercy hunts. Goodness does not trail behind you politely. It pursues you down every road you take.

The cup is for someone else too. What overflows was never meant to stay in the cup.

All three texts end at a table. Psalm 22, Isaiah 53, and Psalm 23 arrive there by different roads, which is how you know it is where the story is going.

Prayer For Whomsoevers

Lord you salvage us you raise us up even amongst our enemies you give us peace that surpasses all understanding and you give us mercy and grace which we don’t deserve. And in that peace you lay us down besides still waters and restore our souls. We praise You Lord and in the name of your son and our savior we say Amen.

One Last Thing

The rabbis and the Jewish leaders got it horribly wrong. But some of the most faithful Jewish people got it right, and that deserves to be celebrated. Every psalm we walked through this week was written by them, kept by them, sung by them in exile, and copied by hand across the centuries so that we could be reading it this morning. Paul says the very oracles of God were entrusted to them. We do not honor the Messiah by diminishing the people who carried his family line and his book. So thank you, and Amen.
