THE ARMOR GOD WORE FIRST: Before Ephesians 6 There Was… ISAIAH 59

Today we strip away the fun, easy, animated view of spiritual warfare and uncover the earlier beginning and deeper reality behind Paul’s words: the Armor of God isn’t a costume you put on; it’s the very gear God wore. Where? Isaiah of course. The “Fifth gospel” as it is called, the “mini-Bible” as it is called, the home of the most detailed and precise Messianic verse in the Old Testament is also the deeper well for Paul’s Full Armor Of God from Eph 6:12-17. There, 700 years prior, in Isaiah 59, God dons the full armor! Here now it is handed to you so you can stand in full understanding of His victory. I guarantee you will learn something here today.

Featured Scripture and Commentary
Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
I spotted fairly early on that the whole armor of God is simply a metaphor for Jesus and His attributes. Do you understand that? Salvation, Righteousness, Faith, Truth, Gospel… Paul was giving us a way to metaphorically wear Jesus and put on Jesus every morning and every time that we are facing a trial or a challenge. What I had no clue about was that it did not originate with Ephesians. It did not originate with Apostle Paul, whom I love by the way. It did not even get begotten in the New Testament but in the Old. In the heart and center of the Old Testament. In Isaiah, which we spoke of recently. It was not Paul’s to give to us to wear. It was originally worn by our Father in Heaven. And not just 1 or two articles (of clothing) but the whole kit and kaboodle. The whole outfit from “Righteous Outfitters LLC”.

Why Did God Need Armor?
In the fifth installment of the Star Trek movie series in the 1980s (for which we are truly thankful), the crew goes to the “Undiscovered Country” helmed by Kirk (scripted by Shatner) and they all think they found God there except for Kirk (humans can definitely glorify themselves when they are writing the character they are portraying in the movie) and he doesn’t see God. He sees a high powered, laser-eyed, metaphysical, greedy, selfish, apparently imprisoned con man who wants the Enterprise. Kirk wisely asks him “What does ‘god’ need with a spaceship”? (It’s a moment)
But I digress. In Isaiah 59, God looks down and sees no human righteous enough to save. So God Himself suits up for battle.
But the question on everyone’s mind: Why does God need armor? Well let’s look at the armor that God wore.

The Belt (Girdle): Righteousness & Faithfulness
Isaiah 11:5 – “Righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.”
The belt holds the tunic tight. For God, His very nature—His rightness and His truth—is what holds His mission together.
The Breastplate: Righteousness
Isaiah 59:17 – “He put on righteousness as a breastplate…”
Protecting the heart. God fights from a place of perfect justice. He doesn’t fight for Himself; He fights for what is right.
The Shoes: Good Tidings/Peace
Isaiah 52:7 – “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings…”
God’s movement is always toward rescue. He comes running with news of salvation.
The Helmet: Salvation
Isaiah 59:17 – “…and an helmet of salvation upon his head.”
Protecting the mind. God’s purpose is to save. His strategy is rooted in deliverance, not destruction.
The Sword: The Word
Isaiah 49:2 – “He hath made my mouth like a sharp sword…”
God’s word is His offensive weapon. It cuts through deception and establishes truth.
The Cloak (Mantle): Zeal
Isaiah 59:17 – “…and was clad with zeal as a cloke.”
A cloak provides warmth and identity. God is wrapped in zeal—a burning passion for His people and His glory.
When Paul writes Ephesians 6, he isn’t telling you to try harder. He is telling you to put on what God already wore. The armor is called the “Armor of God” because it is His nature, His character, and His victory, transferred to you.

One garment though, Paul correctly held back because it was FGO – For God Only.
The Garment: Vengeance
Isaiah 59:17 – “…and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing.”
This is the one piece God did not give to us. In the ancient world, the outer garment defined your role. God wore “Vengeance” because He is the only righteous Judge. We are called to leave vengeance to Him (Romans 12:19).

CORROBORATING SCRIPTURE
Isaiah 59:17, Ephesians 6:12–17, Colossians 2:15, Hebrews 4:12, Romans 13:12
Isaiah 59:17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloke.
Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Colossians 2:15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Here is where I earn my pay. The deeper digging. Since I realized that I had no clue about the truth of the origin of the armor I decided to look and dig deeper to see what else I didn’t know about each individual piece of gear.

Belt of Truth: Not just “honesty.” In Roman gear, the belt (zonē) held the tunic tight so the soldier wouldn’t trip. It holds everything together. Without truth, your righteousness slips, your shield drops. Deception is the enemy’s native language; truth is your structural integrity.
Breastplate of Righteousness: Not your performance. In Isaiah, it was God’s righteousness. This is imputed righteousness. You fight accusation not by saying “I’m good,” but by saying “Christ is my righteousness.” It protects your heart from condemnation.
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: Roman sandals (caligae) had hobnails for grip. This isn’t about comfort; it’s about traction. You stand firm in the peace of Christ so you don’t slip when the ground shakes.
Shield of Faith: The Roman scutum was large and door-like. It didn’t dodge arrows; it absorbed them. Faith doesn’t mean you don’t get hit; it means the fiery darts of doubt and fear burn out against your trust in God’s character.
Helmet of Salvation: Protects the head—the mind. In Isaiah, it was God’s salvation. This guards your future. The enemy attacks with despair about tomorrow. The helmet reminds you: “I am saved, I am being saved, I will be saved.”
Sword of the Spirit: The only offensive weapon. Greek: rhema (spoken word), not just logos (written word). It’s not the Bible on your shelf; it’s the specific verse the Spirit brings to mind at the exact moment of attack. Jesus used this in the wilderness: “It is written…”

The War Is Already Won:
Colossians 2:15 says Christ disarmed principalities and powers. He stripped them of their authority. You aren’t fighting for victory; you are fighting from victory.
You don’t put on the armor to win. You put it on because you’ve already won.
PRAYER FOR WHOMSOEVERS
Lord, as one who finds much joy in your Word and in sharing of your Word please help me always remember this aspect of Your creation which mirrors
and parallels who You are and how You operate:
There is so much magnificence near the oceans you created. But you created them thusly:
Surface faith is emotional and reactive (the waves). Deep faith is rooted and resilient (the “depths”).
You aren’t just in the sparkle; You are in the stillness.
Or… You aren’t just the chocolate… you are the cherry. Uh dare I? As in a box of chocolates You are also the…mystery.
But the revelation is always sweet.
Thank you for your patience and your gifts, Father God and the open door, dear Jesus.
